Adult Learning and Literacy (ALL) provides grants to adult learning centres and part-time community-based literacy programs and ongoing support in the development and delivery of adult focussed programming.   Programming is designed to enable Manitobans to have the ability to understand and employ printed information in daily living activities at work, at home, and in the community and to obtain high school credentials so they can access higher education and/or better employment opportunities.

Summary

Adult literacy programs are community-based and provide adults 18 and over with assistance in developing and improving their skills in reading text, writing, using documents and oral communication. Programming is available on a part-time basis.

The following services may be offered by an Adult Literacy program:

  • Certificates in Literacy and Learning (Stages 1-3) awards by the Department of Advanced Education and Training
  • One-to-One Tutoring
  • Family Literacy programming that supports the literacy development of all family members
  • Literacy support for English as a second language learners

An adult learning centre is a community partnership, which provides adult learners who are 19 years of age and older with opportunities to develop employment skills, enhance their academic qualifications and engage in life long learning. The centres or programs offer a variety of Senior 1 to Senior 4 high school credit courses. They enable learners to complete the Mature Student Diploma Program, obtain the necessary courses as a prerequisite for attending post-secondary institutions or become more competitive for new employment opportunities.

In addition to the Senior 1 to Senior 4 credit courses, adult learning centres may provide the following courses or other services:

Dual Credit Courses
Courses where you can receive credit both high school and post secondary programs.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
PLAR is a process used to identify, document, assess and recognize skills and knowledge. Learning takes place in many situations, including: work, hobbies, family, military, volunteer activities, travel, independent study, formal education, and workplace training. In PLAR, individuals prove learning in a variety of ways.

NC (NON-CREDIT) Academic
Academic courses that do not count towards a mature student high school diploma such as literacy or adult basic education courses.

NC (NON-CREDIT) Vocational
Customized or "fee for service" courses linked to business/industry, or for general interest purposes such as resume writing, interviewing or career exploration courses.

General Educational Development (GED) Testing Service
ALL also administers the General Educational Development (GED) Testing Service. GED diplomas are recognized by most employers and may be accepted for employment, apprenticeship admission, and other training programs.
