Elk Farming in Manitoba

Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives

Last Verified: August 3, 2011

The Livestock Industry Diversification Act and accompanying Regulations allows Manitoba residents to raise elk in a licensed, controlled manner. All elk farms are licensed and inspected. Reports and records on the herd are required and must be kept under the legislation. The legislation also allows for the development of new livestock and processing industries in Manitoba.

Eligibility Criteria

All Manitoba residents are eligible who own land or have title or lease land in Manitoba. Elk farming is prohibited on Crown land. A right of possession of reserve land under an allotment, a certificate of possession or a lease (as defined under the Indian Act) is required if the elk farm is to be located on a reserve.
