Enhance and strengthen the security processes of your organisation with help from the Canada Border Services Agency. By becoming a Partner in Protection, your organization is collaborating with the Agency to enhance and strengthen cargo security to ensure borders can remain open to legitimate trade.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible companies:

  • include importers, exporters, customs brokers, couriers, warehouse operators, freight forwarders, shipping agents, and highway, marine, air, and rail carriers;
  • own or operate facilities in Canada that are directly involved in the importation and exportation of commercial;
  • are of good standing.

Companies that are not eligible but that are linked to trade in commercial goods can join as an associate.

Summary

This commitment to ensuring the security of your cargo, from supplier to customer, helps to lower your company's vulnerability of being used for the purposes of criminal activity.

The program implements minimum security requirements; mandatory site validations; denial, suspension, cancellation, reinstatement and appeal policies and procedures; and an automated application process. As a result, your company:

  • contributes to the protection of Canadian society,
  • benefits from an enhanced reputation as a low-risk company, and
  • can profit from expedited cross-border clearance by applying for membership in the Free and Secure Trade (FAST) program, which provides dedicated FAST lanes at designated border crossings.

Participation in PIP is voluntary and there are no fees associated with joining.

To become a member, you will be required to complete a security profile to describe how your organization meets the program's security requirements. The information you provide will then be confirmed through a site validation performed by a regional CBSA Intelligence Officer. If your organization meets or exceeds the program's requirements, the CBSA will then complete a partnership agreement with you.

The similar security requirements for PIP and the U.S. Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program make it easier to be eligible for both programs, though separate applications must be made. Only one site validation may be necessary for applicants to PIP and C-TPAT.
