Protection of the animal livestock sector is integral to food safety, public health, protection of the resource base, and national and international confidence in Canadian agricultural products. The marketability of animals, their products and by-products is significantly enhanced by Canada's reputation for being free of certain serious diseases.

Eligibility Criteria

Livestock industry and producers, importers and exporters, federal, provincial and international veterinary and public health officials and regulators.

Summary

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) develops and delivers programs and services designed to protect Canadian livestock resources.

CFIA activities include:

  • animal health risk assessments;
  • consulting with sector stakeholders through the Canadian Animal Health Consultative Committee;
  • disease control;
  • disease surveillance;
  • participation in international standard setting for animal health;
  • verifying that exports of animals and animal products meet foreign requirements; and
  • verifying that imports of animals and animal products meet Canadian requirements.
