The National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) is the only legislated, nation-wide, publicly-accessible inventory of its type in Canada. It is a database of information on annual releases to air, water, land and disposal or recycling from all sectors - industrial, government, commercial and others.
2006 NPRI reports must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2007.
Under the authority of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999), owners or operators of facilities that manufacture, process or otherwise use one or more of the NPRI-listed substances under prescribed conditions are required to report to Environment Canada's NPRI.

The NPRI is a major starting point for identifying and monitoring sources of pollution in Canada. It is an important consideration in managing risks to the environment and human health as well as in monitoring indicators for the quality of our air, land, and water. It is also emerging as an indicator for corporate environmental performance.
The NPRI - Substance Information Web page provides information on the NPRI substance lists and links to other sites which provide substance specific information. The substances are listed in six parts. The reporting criteria for the substances listed in each Part differ and are explained in Step 1. Explanations of the footnotes and substance qualifiers are also provided in Step 1.
