Act: Fisheries Act, R.S.C. 1985, c. F-14
Regulation: Fish Toxicant Regulations, SOR/88-258

To Whom Does This Apply?

Sport fishers and anyone who owns and runs or proposes to own and run sport fishing facilities in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

Summary

The Fisheries Act governs the management of fisheries resources and habitats and sets out the rules and penalties for day-to-day conservation and management.

The Fish Toxicant Regulations allow provincial fisheries ministers in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec to authorize the deposit of fish toxicants in provincially managed fisheries waters. "Fish toxicants" are defined as pest control products that are used for the purpose of destroying any fish that is a pest. They are used to eliminate coarse, undesirable fish species so that highly prized sport fish may be introduced.

The provinces cannot presently authorize private individuals to use fish toxicants.
