Act: Freshwater Fish Marketing Act, R.S.C. 1985, c. F-13
Fishers or anyone involved in the interprovincial or export trade of freshwater fish and who live in the Northwest Territories, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.
The Freshwater Fish Marketing Act establishes the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation (FFMC), a Crown corporation, and regulates interprovincial and export trade in freshwater fish. The FFMC is a buyer, processor and marketer of freshwater fish harvested from lakes in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Northwestern Ontario.
The Act gives the FFMC the exclusive right to trade and market fish produced within its mandated region on an interprovincial and export basis. While fishers may sell freshwater fish directly to consumers within the province or territory in which they are licensed to fish, they cannot sell the fish to anyone other than the FFMC for resale, unless authorized under licences issued by the FFMC.
The Corporation:
The FFMC must purchase all legally caught fish offered for sale by licensed fishers, subject to price, terms and conditions of purchase (including quality provisions).
