The Canadian Trade-marks Database contains information on the mark, dates, designs if applicable, the Vienna Code, wares and services, ownership information and more.

Summary

Benefit to Canadians

A trade-mark represents the brand, reputation and dependability of a product or service in the market place.  You should know that a business name is not a trade-mark.  Search the data to make sure that your name does not infringe on a registered mark. Use the data to help you make business decisions such as whether to register your mark, to develop a new logo or to licence a franchise.  You can also gather intelligence on competitors, conduct research in a market segment or identify new business opportunities and partners.

Contents

This database contains all active and many inactive marks.  It also contains additional words and designs which are not, by definition, trade-marks, but that are protected by the  Trade-marks Act (Act) or other related legislation.  These are prohibited marks for which public notice has been given pursuant to Section 9 of the Act.  Also included are plant variety denominations granted pursuant to the Plant Breeders' Rights Act, the symbols and badges of the Boy Scouts of Canada and the Girl Guides of Canada, marks of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Canadian Nurses Association. Furthermore, geographical indications for wines and spirits which have been entered on the list or for which protection has been sought are also part of the database.

Searching

Searching can be done by number, owner, description, wares, services, Vienna Code, by date and status. There are help files on the database to guide you through the options.
