NRC Centre for Surface Transportation Technology (NRC-CSTT)

The NRC Centre for Surface Transportation Technology (NRC-CSTT) is one of NRC's 23 technology centres and research institutes. NRC-CSTT supports Canadian and foreign companies with contract research, technology development, engineering, testing, analysis, and prototyping of heavy vehicles and their on-board and supporting equipment and systems. NRC-CSTT specializes in railway locomotives and freight cars, railway rails and tracks, military vehicles, heavy highway trucks, urban and intercity buses, and heavy off-road vehicles. off-road vehicles.

• Companies of all sizes, as well as government departments and agencies, needing improved performance, durability, economy, and safety from heavy rail, road, and military vehicles and their on-board systems.

• Fleet owners seeking turn-key prototyping of innovative configurations and solutions.
• Manufacturers needing performance characterization of and evaluation of their designs, structures, components, and materials.
• Vehicle operators needing improved methods and protocols for maintenance and standards.

Summary

NRC-CSTT conducts innovative solutions to meet the needs of vehicle manufacturers, owners, and regulators. These may be done for single clients or for several pooling resources to share costs and risks. NRC-CSTT's neutrality, impartiality, and 40-year reputation give an outstanding basis for collaboration among multiple parties.

Three Specialized Divisions
NRC-CSTT operates three business divisions, each specializing in a particular aspect of transportation technology.

• The Rail Division helps clients research, develop, design, optimize, analyze and test the performance of railcars and components, and develop and implement high value maintenance strategies for track and rolling stock.
• The Road Vehicle and Military Systems Division solves problems and improves performance by engineering and testing vehicle and military systems, and by developing new solutions and prototypes.
• The Climatic Engineering Division provides facilities and services to test the performance of vehicles and equipment under an exceptionally wide variety of climatic conditions from high Arctic cold to desert heat.

In-House R&D
NRC-CSTT's R&D group -- Advanced Products and Technology does contract research, technology development, IP generation and licensing, and provides client services for new product concept development, design, prototyping, evaluation and production.

These business divisions draw on a comprehensive suite of advanced facilities and services to meet the most demanding research, engineering, test and design requirements in the transportation industry.

Assistance Provided
NRC-CSTT has facilities that are both advanced and practical for evaluating and testing heavy vehicles and their components and sub-systems. The experienced staff includes some world-leading experts with a record of innovations now in use by the transportation industry in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.
