Earth Sciences Information Centre - ESIC

The Earth Sciences Information Centre (ESIC) is designed to provide the earth science community with a single contact point for its information needs. ESIC integrates the delivery of traditional library-based services with the development and marketing of new, technology-driven information products and services.

Summary

The objectives of the ESIC are to:

• acquire and maintain a comprehensive national resource collection in a variety of formats ranging from print to electronic media;
• create and maintain national bibliographic/information databases on earth sciences;
• provide internal and external clients with physical access to and lending services for the collection;
• provide information services to support the research and information needs of the Earth Sciences Sector;
• provide information services to external clients in other government departments, universities, industry and business.

The ESIC has Canada's largest collection of books, serials and maps in the earth sciences with worldwide coverage. There are two main areas of interest:

• geology, including geochemistry, geochronology, geomorphology, geophysics, mineral resources, mineralogy, palaeontology, petrology, tectonics;
• geomatics, including cartography (aeronautical, geological, thematic, topographic), geodetic and legal surveying, GIS, GPS, photogrammetry, and remote sensing.

The majority of the ESIC holdings are available through the automated library catalogue. Access to the catalogue is available via the Web site at http://ess.nrcan.gc.ca/esic/index_e.php
