Act: Canada Petroleum Resources Act, R.S.C. 1985, c.36, 2nd Supp.
Regulation: Environmental Studies Research Fund Regions Regulations, SOR/87-641, as amended
Any business involved in the exploration and development of petroleum in frontier lands.
Frontier Lands: 31 regions within Yukon, Northwest Territories, Sable Island and offshore.
The Canada Petroleum Resources Act governs interests in petroleum in relation to frontier lands.
The Environmental Studies Research Fund Regions Regulations provides for the support of environmental and social studies that will facilitate effective decision-making related to petroleum exploration and development on frontier lands. The oil and gas industry pays for all studies through a levy collected from interest-holders. The frontier lands are subdivided into 31 prescribed regions. These regions are important in calculating and collecting levies from the petroleum industry.
