GeoConnections is a national partnership program to evolve and expand the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI). The CGDI provides Canadians with on-demand access to location-based, or "geospatial", information (e.g. maps and satellite images) and related services and applications in support of sound decision making.
Eligible are governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as academic and private sectors, on a cost-shared basis varying by opportunity type.
On June 15, 2005, the Government of Canada announced funding of $60 million for a five-year renewal of the GeoConnections program. Whereas the first phase of GeoConnections focused on developing the policies, standards, technologies and partnerships required to build the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI), the second phase is intended to ensure that Canadians will be further able to actively adopt, use and benefit from the CGDI.
From 2005 to 2010, the renewed GeoConnections program will pursue partnerships with particular end-user groups to apply the infrastructure in support of decision making in four key areas (environment and sustainable development, matters of importance to Aboriginal peoples, public health, and public safety and security).
Current or expected opportunities include: framework data maintenance, framework data expansion, distributed thematic data development, standards development support, infrastructure development requests for information (RFIs), capacity-building activities, directed innovation procurement, etc.
GeoConnections contributes to projects that link geospatial data from distributed sources to Web-based, decision-support applications.
There are multiple current and expected opportunities. Please check the Web site at to view the opportunities or to sign up for notification of relevant opportunities.
