The Culture Statistics Program was established in 1972 to serve the culture data needs of government, researchers and the private sector. The program administers surveys and maintains data banks, as well as manages several cross-culture projects which integrate data from a variety of sources and provide specialized analysis.
Culture Labour Market
This is mainly a cost-recovery project which uses the Labour Force Survey and Census data to analyze the jobs associated with the culture sector. This analysis takes many forms, including examining the supply of cultural occupations of professions and trained individuals, as well as the number of workers in specific culture industries and activities.
Culture Trade and Investment (CTI)
This project provides data on the value of all culture goods or services that cross the border regardless of the industry involved in the transaction.
The Economic Impact of Culture in Canada
This analysis estimates the economic impact of the cultural sector (GDP and employment) based on the "Canadian Framework for Culture Statistics". The most recent data, soon to be available, are for the year 2001 at the national level.
Consumption of Culture Goods and Services
This project provides an integrated, in depth look at the consumption of culture goods and services in Canada.
Sport Participation in Canada
The Culture Statistics Program has established key statistical concepts and definitions of the measurement of sport activity, as well as integrates and analyzes existing data.
Government Expenditures on Culture
Three annual surveys provide financial data on cultural activities funded by all levels of government. Included are expenditures on libraries, heritage activities, performing arts, literary arts, visual arts and crafts, broadcasting, film and video, etc. Data are available by level of government (federal, provincial/territorial and municipal), and type of expenditure (operating expenditures, capital expenditures, operating and capital grants and contributions).
