To Whom Does This Apply?

This Act applies in respect of transport by railways to which Part III of the Canada Transportation Act applies.

Summary

The Railway Safety Act is an act to ensure the safe operation of railways and to amend certain other acts in consequence thereof.

The Railway Safety Act is divided into six parts: 

  • Part 1 deals with the construction or alteration of railway works;
  • Part II deals with the operation and maintenance of railway works and equipment;
  • Part III deals with non-railway operations affecting railway safety;
  • Part IV deals with administration and enforcement;
  • Part V deals with miscellaneous provisions; and
  • Part VI deals with consequential amendments to other acts.
