Summary

The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 (CSA 2001), Part 2, places numerous requirements on the shipping industry, including:

  • registration of vessels;
  • certification of officers; and
  • working conditions for seamen.

The Vessels Registry Fees Tariff sets the fees for the registration, change of name, transfer, transmission or mortgage of Canadian vessels.

The Vessel Registration and Tonnage Regulations describe the authorities for the Chief Registrar to keep the Canadian register current as per the CSA 2001. Also, the Vessel Registration and Tonnage Regulations reflect modern Canadian practices for establishing ship's tonnage measurement.
