- How do you know when you are export ready?
I was approached by a store owner in Grand Forks while shopping. She commented on my jewellery and asked where I got it. The rest as they say is history.
I currently have two stores, by choice. For me it takes almost more time than it is worth, however, since I use Grand Forks to have some of my supplies shipped to I drop off my jewelry instead of shipping them.
- What resources did you use to learn about export opportunities?
To learn how to export my products I went to the Canada Manitoba resource centre and I searched the federal government websites. It is really very simple, you just need to do your research. To find new retailers I use web searches for businesses that are suited to my style of jewellery.
- What are the greatest challenges and biggest benefits of exporting?
Setting up your first export takes some work; however, the ability to expand your sales channels to the US market makes all the time and effort worth it.
- Can e-business help?
Absolutely, it enables you to not only sell to individuals online but it also expands your ability to market your business to other retailers. Always make it known that you are available and looking for new retailers. Include wholesale information or contact page/section on your website.
- Can small business compete in International markets?
Without a doubt, find your niche and find like minded retailers that love what you do, there are bound to be stores all over the world that fit the bill. Often small businesses maintain the ability to maneuver quickly. Don't bite off more than you can chew, know your product and know what you can and can't supply and how long it will take you to deliver. Then have fun.
